Halakhah from Qumran to the Mishnah: Concluding Remarks -- Appendix of Hebrew Texts -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index of Primary Sources -- General IndexHalakhah in the Making offers the first comprehensive study of the legal material found in the Dead Sea Scrolls and its significance in the greater history of Jewish religious law (halakhah). Aharon Shemesh's pioneering study revives an issue long dormant in religious scholarship: namely, the relationship between rabbinic law, as written more than one hundred years after the destruction of the Second Temple, and Jewish practice during the Second Temple. The monumental discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls in Qumran led to the revelation of this missing material and the closing of a two-hundred-year gap in knowledge, allowing work to begin comparing specific laws of the Qumran sect with rabbinic laws. With the publication of scroll 4QMMT-a polemical letter by Dead Sea sectarians concerning points of Jewish law-an effective comparison was finally possible. This is the first book-length treatment of the material to appear since the publication of 4QMMT and the first attempt to apply its discoveries to the work of nineteenth-century scholars. It is also the first work on this important topic written in plain language and accessible to nonspecialists in the history of Jewish law.Taubman lectures in Jewish studies.Jewish lawHistoryTo 1500Qumran communityRabbinical literatureHistory and criticismJudaismHistoryTo 70 A.DElectronic books.Jewish lawHistoryQumran community.Rabbinical literatureHistory and criticism.JudaismHistory296.1/80902Shemesh Aharon925935MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910456097203321Halakhah in the making2462073UNINA04693nam 2200757 450 991079336160332120191205151354.01-5261-4196-51-5261-2581-11-5261-2580-310.7765/9781526125804(CKB)4100000007164344(MiAaPQ)EBC5601863(StDuBDS)EDZ0002046367(OCoLC)1076271901(MdBmJHUP)musev2_78509(UkMaJRU)992979792226201631(DE-B1597)659631(DE-B1597)9781526125804(EXLCZ)99410000000716434420191205h20182019 uy| 0engur||#---|||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierEkphrastic encounters new interdisciplinary essays on literature and the visual arts /edited by David Kennedy and Richard MeekManchester, UK :Manchester University Press,2018.©20191 online resource (xiii, 272 pages) illustrations; digital file(s)Manchester scholarship onlineIncludes index.1-5261-2579-X Includes bibliographical references and index.Introduction: from paragone to encounter / David Kennedy and Richard Meek -- Part I: Early modern encounters : 1. Heffernan. This book offers a comprehensive reassessment of ekphrasis: the verbal representation of visual art. Ekphrasis has been traditionally regarded as a form of paragone (competition) between word and image. This interdisciplinary collection of essays seeks to complicate this critical paradigm and proposes a more reciprocal model of ekphrasis that involves an encounter or exchange between visual and textual cultures. 0This critical and theoretical shift demands a new form of ekphrastic poetics, which is less concerned with representational and institutional struggles, and more concerned with ideas of ethics, affect and intersubjectivity. Ekphrastic encounters brings together leading scholars working in the field of word-and-image studies and offers a fresh exploration of ekphrastic texts from the Renaissance to the present day. Taken together, the chapters establish a new set of theoretical frameworks for exploring the ekphrastic encounter.Manchester scholarship online.EkphrasisArt and literatureLiteraturemupLiterature & Literary StudiesbicsscLITERARY CRITICISM / GeneralbisachElectronic books.
