Controversially, to say the least, Gerald Lynch maintains that a version of it may already have been written - as a great Canadian short story cycle. In this unique text, the author launches into a fascinating literary-historical survey and genre study of the English-Canadian short story cycle - the literary form that occupies the middle ground between short stories and novels. This wide-ranging volume has much to say about the continuing relationship between place and identity in Canadian literature and culture. Initially, Lynch employs Stephen Leacock's Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town for illustrative purposes, and begins by discussing two definitive features of short story cycles: the ways in which their form conveys meaning and the paramount function of their concluding stories, which are here called 'return stories.' Lynch then devotes five discrete but related chapters to six Canadian short story cycles, spanning some one hundred years from Duncan Campbell Scott to Thomas King, and tracing some surprising continuities in this distinctive genre. A number of the works are discussed extensively for the first time within the tradition of the Canadian short story cycle, which has never before been accorded book-length study in English. This engaging and intelligent volume will be of interest to the general reader as well as specialists in Canadian literature.Short stories, CanadianHistory and criticismCanadian fiction20th centuryHistory and criticismCycles (Literature)Electronic books.Short stories, CanadianHistory and criticism.Canadian fictionHistory and criticism.Cycles (Literature)813/.010971/0904Lynch Gerald1953-997546MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910455956903321The one and the many2478451UNINA04320nam 22005415 450 991087466510332120250807135830.09783031536748(electronic bk.)978303153673110.1007/978-3-031-53674-8(MiAaPQ)EBC31545392(Au-PeEL)EBL31545392(CKB)33329734600041(DE-He213)978-3-031-53674-8(EXLCZ)993332973460004120240722d2024 u| 0engurcnu||||||||txtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierFundamentals of Public Budgeting and Finance /by Aman Khan2nd ed. 2024.Cham :Springer International Publishing :Imprint: Palgrave Macmillan,2024.1 online resource (531 pages)Print version: Khan, Aman Fundamentals of Public Budgeting and Finance Cham : Springer International Publishing AG,c2024 9783031536731 1: Market System and the Role of Government -- Part I: Budget Background -- 2: Elements of Taxation -- 3: Elements of Government Expenditures -- 4: An Overview of Government Revenues -- Part II: Budget Basics -- 5: Understanding the Budget Process -- 6: Budget Systems, Underlying Structures, and Characteristics -- 7: Capital Budgeting and Improvement Process -- 8: Evaluating Capital Projects for Budget Decisions -- Part III: Budget Tools -- 9: Capital Rationing and Budget Allocation -- 10: Elements of Budget Forecasting -- 11: Revenues, Expenditures, and Economic Base -- 12: Overview Critical Issues and Challenges.“Dr. Khan has written a masterful budgeting book that allows even a novice to understand the economic, structural, and political aspects of the governmental budgetary process.
