But the urge to record, catalogue and advertise the wealth of new publications in the age of print created an additional and valuable resource: book lists. Printers made lists of their available stock; owners catalogued their libraries; religious authorities drew up indexes of banned books; assessors inventoried collections and stock as part of the settlement of estates, or legal proceedings. This volume examines an array of such lists taken from a variety of European countries during the fifteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The result is a wide-ranging re-evaluation of one of the most interesting and underused resources for early modern book history. Par sa parfaite maîtrise de ce qu’il est aujourd’hui convenu d’appeler « l’archéologie du bâti », puis par la confrontation de ses hypothèses aux possibilités qu’offrent aujourd’hui les sciences exactes comme la dendrochronologie ou les analyses de mortier, l’auteur est parvenu à renouveler totalement les données et les connaissances que nous avions sur ces deux cathédrales. Cette étude restera une très belle illustration des possibilités que gardent encore et toujours un édifice qui a beaucoup évolué au cours de son histoire et qui a déjà été fort restauré, pour ne pas dire « raclé », lors de la mode dévastatrice des pierres apparentes. Isabelle Parron-Kontis nous démontre ici de façon magistrale qu’on peut encore faire parler un édifice profondément remanié par une observation fine, et des méthodes de relevés, d’analyses et d’enregistrement pointues adaptées à l’archéologie du bâti. Et c’est plutôt encourageant !
