But if such conjectures are true, asks Louis Feldman, how did Jews succeed in winning so many adherents, whether full-fledged proselytes or "sympathizers" who adopted one or more Jewish practices? Systematically evaluating attitudes toward Jews from the time of Alexander the Great to the fifth century A.D., Feldman finds that Judaism elicited strongly positive and not merely unfavorable responses from the non-Jewish population. Jews were a vigorous presence in the ancient world, and Judaism was strengthened substantially by the development of the Talmud. Although Jews in the Diaspora were deeply Hellenized, those who remained in Israel were able to resist the cultural inroads of Hellenism and even to initiate intellectual counterattacks. Feldman draws on a wide variety of material, from Philo, Josephus, and other Graeco-Jewish writers through the Apocrypha, the Pseudepigrapha, the Church Councils, Church Fathers, and imperial decrees to Talmudic and Midrashic writings and inscriptions and papyri. Desde La Habana, a inicios de 1969 los intelectuales Isabel LarguiÌa y John Dumoulin comenzaron a difundir su primer manuscrito titulado Â«Por un feminismo cientiÌficoÂ» el cual seraÌ editado hacia 1971 por Casa de Las AmeÌricas. El esfuerzo intelectual que pergenÌƒaron estuvo dirigido a comprender las modalidades de explotacioÌn que atanÌƒen a las mujeres, asiÌ como las posibles alternativas emancipatorias. Su objetivo no era tanto el de agregar una nota al pie a los consagrados escritos de Karl Marx y Friedrich Engels sino poner en tensioÌn los liÌmites del marxismo y el feminismo a la hora de interceptar la opresioÌn de las mujeres. Anidada en el seno de un paiÌs socialista, la contribucioÌn de LarguiÌa-Dumoulin constituye un modo de adentrarnos a los complejos y no siempre armoniosos viÌnculos entre feminismo y marxismo, asiÌ como un modo de introducirnos histoÌrica y poliÌticamente a las tensiones y acercamientos que se produjeron entre feministas y otras organizaciones de izquierda en los principales centros de AmeÌrica Latina y El Caribe.
