Desse quadro global destacam-se duas categorias básicas: a casa de rés-do-chão e andar, e a casa terrea, corresponden­tes a outras tantas áreas geográficas fundamentais, Norte e Sul. A casa urbana apresenta-se também sob duas formas prin­cipais: a casa burguesa e mesteiral, vertical, esguia e alta, de função híbrida de residência-loja; e o palácio, de fachada larga, rés-do-chão e andar nobre, que repete em versáo citadina o solar rural. Em muitos casos essa arquitectura ficava á margem do conforto e concepção racional da orgânica doméstica; era um prolongamento da lavoura, em que esta importava mais do que as próprias pessoas.
