Plusieurs études historiques mettent en lumière des expériences originales, parfois sans lendemain, et quelques-unes des conquêtes réelles acquises au cours du siècle : paradoxalement, si le xixe siècle à l’échelle internationale voit l’instruction des filles rattraper partiellement son retard et naître une profession féminine, celle d’institutrice, ces ouvertures ne remettent jamais en cause l’image traditionnelle de la fragilité féminine, ni la vocation maternelle de la jeune fille. Autour de Sand, sont interrogées, en Angleterre, en Italie, aux Etats- Unis les représentations de l’éducation féminine diffusées par penseurs et écrivains. D’étonnantes discordances apparaissent, entre la vivacité des portraits de petites filles, de Sophie à Cosette ou à la Petite Fadette, et la brièveté, voire l’absence de récit d’éducation. Ou bien entre la ferveur éducative de Sand et son échec pédagogique auprès de sa propre fille : la part du non maîtrisé est considérable en matière d’éducation, comme le montre l’admirable et mystérieux récit de la vocation musicale de Consuelo.
