Yet a central aspect of Maimonideanism has been overlooked: the formal reception of the Guide of the Perplexed through commentary. In Rewriting Maimonides, Igor H. De Souza offers a comprehensive analysis of six early philosophical commentaries, written in Italy, Spain, and France, by some of Maimonides' most loyal followers. The early commentaries represent the most creative period of exegesis of the Guide. De Souza's analysis dispels the notion that the tradition of commentary on the Guide is monolithic. Rather, De Souza's study illuminates how each commentator offers distinctive readings. Challenging the hierarchy of text and commentary, Rewriting Maimonides studies commentaries on the Guide as texts in their own right. De Souza approaches the form of commentary as a multifaceted cultural practice. Employing historical, philosophical, and literary methods, this publication fills a lacuna in the history of the Guide through a global perspective on commentary.Jewish thought, philosophy, and religionJewish philosophyEarly works to 1800JudaismWorks to 1900Philosophy, MedievalCommentaryGuide of the PerplexedKommentarMaimonidesMiddle AgesMittelalter(DE-601)104500719(DE-588)4136710-8Kommentargnd(DE-601)104675152(DE-588)4049716-1RezeptiongndHISTORY / JewishbisacshCommentary.Guide of the Perplexed.Maimonides.Middle Ages.Jewish philosophyJudaismPhilosophy, Medieval.Commentary.Guide of the Perplexed.Kommentar.Maimonides.Middle Ages.Mittelalter.KommentarRezeptionHISTORY / Jewish.181/.06De Souza Igor H.987166Moses ben Solomonof Salerno,-1279.1247366Moses ben Solomonof Salerno,-1279.1247366Gracian Zerahiah ben Isaac ben Shealtielactive 13th century.1247367Gracian Zerahiah ben Isaac ben Shealtielactive 13th century.1247367Falaquera Shem Tov ben Josephapproximately 1225-approximately 1295.1247368Falaquera Shem Tov ben Josephapproximately 1225-approximately 1295.1247368Caspi Josephapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.1247369Caspi Josephapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.1247369Caspi Josephapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.1247369Caspi Josephapproximately 1280-approximately 1340.1247369Mosesof Narbonne,-1362.1247370Mosesof Narbonne,-1362.1247370De Souza Igor H.1980-DE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK9910309741403321Rewriting Maimonides2891730UNINA
