En effet, bien que les Étrusques passent pour le plus ancien peuple d'Italie et pour l'une des civilisations les plus anciennes d'Europe, leur histoire jusqu'au début du xxe siècle n'avait pas fait l'objet d'études scientifiques spécifiques : les Étrusques étaient jugés inférieurs aux Grecs ou aux Romains et ils leur étaient sans cesse comparés.
