Conclusion --Notes --Bibliography --Index --AcknowledgmentsHuman Rights in the Shadow of Colonial Violence explores the relationship between the human rights movement emerging after 1945 and the increasing violence of decolonization. Based on material previously inaccessible in the archives of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the United Nations Human Rights Commission, this comparative study uses the Mau Mau War (1952-1956) and the Algerian War (1954-1962) to examine the policies of two major imperial powers, Britain and France. Historian Fabian Klose considers the significance of declared states of emergency, counterinsurgency strategy, and the significance of humanitarian international law in both conflicts. Klose's findings from these previously confidential archives reveal the escalating violence and oppressive tactics used by the British and French military during these anticolonial conflicts in North and East Africa, where Western powers that promoted human rights in other areas of the world were opposed to the growing global acceptance of freedom, equality, self-determination, and other postwar ideals. Practices such as collective punishment, torture, and extrajudicial killings did lasting damage to international human rights efforts until the end of decolonization. Clearly argued and meticulously researched, Human Rights in the Shadow of Colonial Violence demonstrates the mutually impacting histories of international human rights and decolonization, expanding our understanding of political violence in human rights discourse.Pennsylvania studies in human rights.Human rightsKenyaHuman rightsAlgeriaKenyaHistoryMau Mau Emergency, 1952-1960AlgeriaHistoryRevolution, 1954-1962Great BritainColoniesAfricaFranceColoniesAfricaElectronic books.Human rightsHuman rights965/.046Klose Fabian871428Geyer Dona1053091MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910463527803321Human rights in the shadow of colonial violence2484770UNINA01258nam0 22002891i 450 UON0034793320231205104328.67022-01-01533-320091127d1980 |0itac50 bafreFR|||| 1||||Voix et traces narratives chez Stendhalanalyse sèmiotique de Vanina Vanini ou particularités sura la dernière vente de carbonari décpuverte dans les États du papeJean PeytardParisLes Éditeurs français réunisc1980139 p.21 cm.001UON003479342001 Entailles210 ParisLes Éditeurs réunis.STENDHAL (pseud.)UONC042347FIFRParisUONL002984844Letteratura francese. This conference was jointly organized by the editorial office of the Euro-Mediterranean Journal for Environmental Integration in Sfax, Tunisia and Springer (MENA Publishing Program) in Germany. It aimed to give a more concrete expression to the Euro-Mediterranean integration process by supplementing existing North-South programs and agreements with a new multilateral scientific forum that emphasizes in particular the vulnerability and proactive remediation of the Euro-Mediterranean region from an environmental point of view. This volume gives a general and brief overview on current research focusing on emerging environmental issues and challenges and its applications to a variety of problems in the Euro-Mediterranean zone and surrounding regions. It contains over five hundred and eighty carefully refereed short contributions to the conference. Topics covered include (1) innovative approaches and methods for environmental sustainability, (2) environmental risk assessment, bioremediation, ecotoxicology, and environmental safety, (3) water resources assessment, planning, protection, and management, (4) environmental engineering and management, (5) natural resources: characterization, assessment, management, and valorization, (6) intelligent techniques in renewable energy (biomass, wind, waste, solar), (7) sustainable management of marine environment and coastal areas, (8) remote sensing and GIS for geo-environmental investigations, (9) environmental impacts of geo/natural hazards (earthquakes, landslides, volcanic, and marine hazards), and (10) the environmental health science (natural and social impacts on Human health). Presenting a wide range of topics and new results, this edited volume will appeal to anyone working in the subject area, including researchers and students interested to learn more about new advances in environmental research initiatives in view of the ever growing environmental degradation in the Euro-Mediterranean region, which has turned environmental and resource protection into an increasingly important issue hampering sustainable development and social welfare.Advances in Science, Technology & Innovation, IEREK Interdisciplinary Series for Sustainable Development,2522-8722EnvironmentEnvironmental chemistryEnvironmental managementPollutionEnvironmental SciencesEnvironmental ChemistryEnvironmental ManagementPollutionEnvironment.Environmental chemistry.Environmental management.Pollution.Environmental Sciences.Environmental Chemistry.Environmental Management.Pollution.363.70071Kallel Amjadedthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtKsibi Mohamededthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtBen Dhia Hamededthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtKhélifi Nabiledthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/edtMiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910299412003321Recent Advances in Environmental Science from the Euro-Mediterranean and Surrounding Regions2531568UNINA
