Susie Protschky contends that visual representations of nature and landscape were core elements of how Europeans understood the tropics, justified their territorial claims in the region, and understood their place both in imperial Europe and in colonized Asia during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her book thus makes a significant contribution to studies of empire, art and environment, as well as to histories of Indonesia and Europe. Surveying a rich visual culture developed over a period of some 350 years of Dutch colonial engagement with Indonesia Susie Protschky demonstrates how views of the archipelago’s environment were far from simple topographical souvenirs. Rather, this book reveals how images of the tropics visually articulated colonial attempts to legitimize and historicize what were in fact continually changing and contested claims to Dutch territorial sovereignty in the Indies. Further, colonial images of nature were routinely inflected with diverse cultural preoccupations, among them the constitution of gender, class and racial boundaries in Indies society; the tenor of sexual mores in the tropics; and the political role of religion in the archipelago. Landscape art thus indexed colonial views on a range of pressing social and political concerns.Verhandelingen van het Koninklijk Instituut voor Taal-, Land- en Volkenkunde270.Orientalism in artArt, European19th centuryArt, European20th centuryArt, DutchIndonesia19th centuryArt, DutchIndonesia20th centuryArtPolitical aspectsIndonesiaIndonesiaIn artTropicsIn artIndonesiaDescription and travelIndonesiaHistory1798-1942NetherlandsColoniesAsiaElectronic books.Orientalism in art.Art, EuropeanArt, EuropeanArt, DutchArt, DutchArtPolitical aspects720Protschky Susie861523MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910463256503321Images of the tropics1922609UNINA05048nam 22006615 450 991029831610332120200707031347.03-319-04111-810.1007/978-3-319-04111-7(CKB)2550000001199665(EBL)1698144(OCoLC)880132023(SSID)ssj0001178567(PQKBManifestationID)11707371(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001178567(PQKBWorkID)11169019(PQKB)10995860(MiAaPQ)EBC1698144(DE-He213)978-3-319-04111-7(iGPub)SPNA0031991(PPN)176108998(EXLCZ)99255000000119966520140127d2014 u| 0engur|n|---|||||txtccrInflammation and Oxidative Stress in Neurological Disorders Effect of Lifestyle, Genes, and Age /by Akhlaq A. Summary, perspective, and directions for future studies.Consumption of healthy balanced diet (colored and green vegetables, fresh fruits, lean meats, fish, and whole grain) along with moderate exercise (30-45 min/day), and 6-7 hours of sleep results in a healthier blood pressure pattern and low cholesterol levels leading into a reduced risk of obesity related diseases, such as diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. Both these pathological conditions are not only the risk factors for heart disease, but also contribute and promote the risk for stroke, Alzheimer disease, and depression. A healthy lifestyle -- which includes a healthy diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables, moderate exercise for maintaining a healthy body weight, and optimal sleep may help in preventing not only diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, but delaying the pathogenesis of stroke, Alzheimer disease, and depression. Information on diet, exercise, and sleep is scattered throughout the literature in the form of original papers, reviews, and some books, which deal with the effects of diet, exercise, and sleep on viscera. This monograph is the first to describe the effect of neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in relation to diet, exercise, and sleep on brain. It describes the contribution of dietary carbohydrates, fats, protein, and nucleic acids in neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in the normal aged brain and in the brains of patients with neurological disorders. Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in the Brain presents readers with cutting edge and comprehensive information on the effect of diet, exercise, and sleep on neuroinflammation and oxidative stress in normal brains and brains from patients with neurological disorders. It is hoped that this monograph will be useful to postgraduate students, faculty, research scientists, nutritionists, exercise physiologists, and physicians, who are curious about the molecular mechanisms that link neuroinflammation and oxidative stress with the pathogenesis of neurotraumatic, neurodegenerative, and neuropsychiatric disorders.NeurosciencesHuman physiologyNeurologyNeuroscienceshttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/B18006Human Physiologyhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/B13004Neurologyhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/H36001Neurosciences.Human physiology.Neurology.Neurosciences.Human Physiology.Neurology.610612612.8616.8Farooqui Akhlaq Aauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut891929BOOK9910298316103321Inflammation and Oxidative Stress in Neurological Disorders2502157UNINA
