The author constructs an interracial genealogy of detective fiction to create a nuanced picture of the ways that black and white authors appropriated and cultivated literary conventions that coalesced in a recognizable genre at the turn of the twentieth century. These authors tinkered with detective fiction's puzzle-elements to address a variety of historical contexts, including the exigencies of chattel slavery, the erosion of working-class solidarities by racial and ethnic competition, and accelerated mass production. Dreams for Dead Bodies demonstrates that nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American literature was broadly engaged with detective fiction, and that authors rehearsed and refined its formal elements in literary works typically relegated to the margins of the genre. By looking at these margins, the book argues, we can better understand the origins and cultural functions of American detective fiction.Class, culture.Work in literatureSlavery in literatureWorking class in literatureAfrican Americans in literatureDetective and mystery stories, AmericanHistory and criticismliteraturecultural studiesEdgar Allan PoeJupiterMark TwainWork in literature.Slavery in literature.Working class in literature.African Americans in literature.Detective and mystery stories, AmericanHistory and criticism.813/.087209Robinson Michelle1979-970911Michigan Publishing (University of Michigan)MdBmJHUPMdBmJHUPBOOK9910136431603321Dreams for Dead Bodies2435471UNINA04346oam 22006374a 450 991027235570332120230621140720.09783944773131394477313610.12946/gplh4(CKB)4100000004240066(OAPEN)1004830(OCoLC)1146295047(MdBmJHUP)muse84194(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/36071(ScCtBLL)6d52943d-bc83-4e08-9c70-56d455c13998(OCoLC)1163822410(EXLCZ)99410000000424006620200324e20202016 uy 0spauuuuu---auuuutxtrdacontentcrdamediacrrdacarrierLegislar en la América hispánica en la temprana edad modernaProcesos y características de la producción de los Decretos del Tercer Concilio Provincial Mexicano (1585) /Osvaldo Rodolfo MoutinFrankfurt am MainMax Planck Institute for Legal History and Legal Theory2016Baltimore, Maryland :Project Muse,2020©20201 online resource (214) Global perspectives on legal history,2196-9752 ;volume 4"The decrees of the Third Mexican Provincial Council, celebrated in 1585, had an important impact on the organization of the colonial Church and Spanish-American society, from the time they were published in 1622 until the nineteenth century. New possibilities of research had been made possible due to the publication of the working manuscripts in recent years, enabling a better understanding of the juridical work produced by the bishops. Given these new materials, the author has delved deeper into the drafting processes carried out by the provincial council. Taking a close look at the reports sent to the council, the theological and juridical treaties, and other conciliar and synodal legislation, along with the consultations to jurists and theologians, the author has identified different processes of drafting of the conciliar decrees. The result of this research allows us to relocate the authorship of the conciliar decrees to the Mexican episcopate as well as establish the degree of their originality. Locality of the law and its significance in the legal order in force at that time is one of the characteristics of the body of decrees promulgated at the Third Mexican Provincial Council."
