Ce fut l'une des plus ambitieuses qu'ait connu le bâti civil du Vieux-Lyon, secteur sauvegardé inscrit au patrimoine mondial la même année. En donnant la parole aux divers protagonistes du chantier, maître d'ouvrage et architectes, conservateurs et archéologues, cet ouvrage est plus qu'une publication scientifique classique. C'est aussi le récit d'une réalisation technique et architecturale complexe et le bilan d'un parcours scientifique et culturel polymorphe. Il était évident pour tous que les bâtiments qui abritent le Musée historique de la ville de Lyon et le Musée international de la marionnette constituaient eux-mêmes la pièce maîtresse de la collection muséographique. Une enquête historique et archéologique exemplaire s'imposait face à ces témoins privilégiés de l'histoire urbaine. Plus que de l'étude d'un hôtel particulier, fût-il grandi par le nom des Guadani, lignée de célèbres banquiers italiens qui l'occupèrent dans le courant du xvie siècle, il s'agissait, à partir d'un îlot délimité par les actuelles montée du Garillan, montée Saint-Barthélemy et rue de Gadagne, d'aborder l'histoire d'un fragment de ville dans ses manifestations matérielles et symboliques. Dans le fond, le travail présenté ici s'inscrit dans la tradition de topographie historique qui consiste à collecter et à organiser des informations d'origine diverse sur un territoire urbain et à les représenter graphiquement, en plan, élévation et vue cavalière.
