Il y rejoignit d’autres Genevois qui se consacraient au commerce et à la réparation des « montres turques », objets dont la délicate mécanique ne servait pas seulement à mesurer le temps mais symbolisait aussi, aux yeux des philosophes, les rouages de la société humaine. De retour à Genève, Isaac fut-il l’un de ces voyageurs qui, revenus au bercail, envoûtent leurs proches du récit de leurs souvenirs ? L’œuvre de Jean-Jacques est traversée de motifs qui semblent devoir beaucoup aux quelques années passées par notre rhabilleur sur les rives du Bosphore, au service d’un Sérail dont les secrets peuplaient l’imagination de l’Europe des Lumières. Quelle fut l’influence du fantasme oriental dans la vie et l’œuvre du Citoyen de Genève ? C’est la question à laquelle veut répondre cet ouvrage. L’enquête porte d’abord sur Isaac et la congrégation genevoise d’Istanbul, mais prend également en compte les tribulations d’une branche « persane » de la famille Rousseau. Chemin faisant, elle se penche sur l’œuvre de J.-É. Liotard, peintre genevois qui, ayant travaillé dans la capitale ottomane, contribua au succès des « turqueries ». Dans une deuxième partie, des spécialistes de J.-J.
