Part One considers the development of astronomy in the Americas as a response, in part, to the Supernova of 1054, which may have led to a cultural renaissance in astronomy. He then goes on to explore the contemporary understanding of supernovae, contrasting it with that of the ancient Americas. Part Two is framed through the appearances of great comets, which had major divinatory significance in early China. The author discusses the advancement of observational astronomy in China, its influence on politics and its role in the survival or failure of empires. Furthermore, the contemporary understanding of comets is also discussed for comparison. Part Three, on India, considers the magnificent observatories of the Rajput king Jai Singh II, and the question of their purpose. The origins of Indian astronomy are examined in Vedic thought and its development is followed through the period of Jai Singh, including the role played by solar eclipses. The author also includes a modern explanation of our understanding of eclipses to date. In the final section of the book, McLeod discusses how ancient traditions might help modern civilization better understand Earth’s place in the cosmos.Historical & Cultural Astronomy,2509-310XAstronomyAstrophysicsPhysicsScience—Social aspectsAnthropologyAstronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmologyhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P22006History and Philosophical Foundations of Physicshttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P29000Societal Aspects of Physics, Outreach and Educationhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/P34000Anthropologyhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X12000Astronomy.Astrophysics.Physics.Science—Social aspects.Anthropology.Astronomy, Astrophysics and Cosmology.History and Philosophical Foundations of Physics.Societal Aspects of Physics, Outreach and Education.Anthropology.520McLeod Alexusauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut803684BOOK9910254621303321Astronomy in the Ancient World2544843UNINA04550oam 22007814a 450 991016354630332120240528213824.00-585-29214-0(CKB)111004365814590(MH)012136444-5(SSID)ssj0000110758(PQKBManifestationID)12034011(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000110758(PQKBWorkID)10065473(PQKB)11574073(OCoLC)36994272(MdBmJHUP)muse82540(OCoLC)1136198256(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/41995(EXLCZ)9911100436581459019970522d1997 uy 0engur|||||||nn|ntxtccrBetween the cracks of historyFrancis Edward Abernethy, editor ; Carolyn Fiedler Satterwhite, assistant editor ; illustrations by Cynthia Fisher1st ed.University of North Texas Press1997Denton, Tex. :University of North Texas Press,1997.©1997.1 online resource (x, 284 p. )ill. ;Publications of the Texas Folklore Society ;55Bibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph1-57441-036-9 Includes bibliographical references and index.Between the cracks of history --Classroom definitions of folklore /F.E.
