The author uses panel survey data with internationally comparable questions on disability for Ethiopia, Malawi, Tanzania and Uganda. It presents evidence on the prevalence of disability and its strong and consistent association with multidimensional poverty, mortality, economic insecurity and deprivations in education, morbidity and employment. It shows that disability needs to be considered from multiple angles including aging, gender, health and poverty. Ultimately, this study makes a call for inclusion and prevention interventions as solutions to the deprivations associated with impairments and health conditions. .Palgrave Studies in Disability and International DevelopmentEconomic developmentSocial changePeople with disabilitiesEconomic policyAfrica—Economic conditionsDevelopment and Social Changehttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/913030Disability Studieshttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/X22280Development Policyhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/913020Development and Healthhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/913060African Economicshttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/W45020Development Theoryhttps://scigraph.springernature.com/ontologies/product-market-codes/913010EthiopiaMalawiTanzaniaUgandaAfricafastDeveloping countriesfastdevelopmentmortalitySen’s capability approacheconomic insecuritypovertyEconomic development.Social change.People with disabilities.Economic policy.Africa—Economic conditions.Development and Social Change.Disability Studies.Development Policy.Development and Health.African Economics.Development Theory.338.9Mitra Sophieauthttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut888221MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910231246603321Disability, Health and Human Development1984121UNINA
