We describe and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the different estimation methods. We find that the growth of the shadow economy—which is now remarkably large in the 76 countries—is strongly related to increasing burdens of taxation and social security contributions, as well as to the extent of state regulatory activities. Rising corruption also has a clearly positive impact on the growth of the shadow economy.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2000/026MacroeconomicsimfMoney and Monetary PolicyimfTaxationimfEconomics: GeneralimfInformal EconomyimfUnderground EconomimfTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: GeneralimfMonetary SystemsimfStandardsimfRegimesimfGovernment and the Monetary SystemimfPayment SystemsimfLabor Economics: GeneralimfEconomics of specific sectorsimfPublic finance & taxationimfMonetary economicsimfLabourimfincome economicsimfInformal economyimfCurrenciesimfLaborimfTax incidenceimfMarginal effective tax rateimfInformal sectorimfEconomicsimfTax administration and procedureimfMoneyimfLabor economicsimfIncome economicsimfUnited StatesimfMacroeconomicsMoney and Monetary PolicyTaxationEconomics: GeneralInformal EconomyUnderground EconomTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: GeneralMonetary SystemsStandardsRegimesGovernment and the Monetary SystemPayment SystemsLabor Economics: GeneralEconomics of specific sectorsPublic finance & taxationMonetary economicsLabourincome economicsInformal economyCurrenciesLaborTax incidenceMarginal effective tax rateInformal sectorEconomicsTax administration and procedureMoneyLabor economicsIncome economicsSchneider Friedrich241913Enste Dominik630274DcWaIMFBOOK9910219908903321Shadow Economies Around the World3654741UNINA
