Exploiting demographic and economic variation in prefectural data between 1990 and 2007, we find that aging of the working age population has had a significant negative impact on total factor productivity. Moreover, prefectures that aged at a faster pace experienced lower overall inflation, while prefectures with higher population growth experienced higher inflation. The results give strong support to the notion that demographic headwinds can have a non-trivial impact on total factor productivity and deflationary pressures.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2016/237DemographyJapanIndustrial productivityJapanInflationimfLaborimfProduction and Operations ManagementimfDemographyimfPrice LevelimfDeflationimfDemographic Trends, Macroeconomic Effects, and ForecastsimfEconomics of the ElderlyimfEconomics of the HandicappedimfNon-labor Market DiscriminationimfProductionimfCostimfCapital and Total Factor ProductivityimfCapacityimfLabor Standards: Labor Force CompositionimfPopulation & demographyimfMacroeconomicsimfPopulation & migration geographyimfLabourimfincome economicsimfAgingimfTotal factor productivityimfPopulation growthimfLabor force participationimfPopulation and demographicsimfPricesimfPopulation agingimfIndustrial productivityimfPopulationimfLabor marketimfJapanimfDemographyIndustrial productivityInflationLaborProduction and Operations ManagementDemographyPrice LevelDeflationDemographic Trends, Macroeconomic Effects, and ForecastsEconomics of the ElderlyEconomics of the HandicappedNon-labor Market DiscriminationProductionCostCapital and Total Factor ProductivityCapacityLabor Standards: Labor Force CompositionPopulation & demographyMacroeconomicsPopulation & migration geographyLabourincome economicsAgingTotal factor productivityPopulation growthLabor force participationPopulation and demographicsPricesPopulation agingIndustrial productivityPopulationLabor market304.60952Westelius Niklas1449380Liu Yihan1377331DcWaIMFBOOK9910162943803321The Impact of Demographics on Productivity and Inflation in Japan3647624UNINA
