This paper studies the effect of the aging of the workforce on labor productivity, identifies the main transmission channels, and examines what policies might mitigate the effects of aging. We find that workforce aging reduces growth in labor productivity, mainly through its negative effect on TFP growth. Projected workforce aging could reduce TFP growth by an average of 0.2 percentage points every year over the next two decades. A variety of policies could ameliorate this effect.IMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;No. 2016/238AgingEuropeLabor supplyEuropeIndustrial productivityEuropeLaborimfProduction and Operations ManagementimfDemographyimfMacroeconomics: ProductionimfInnovationimfResearch and DevelopmentimfTechnological ChangeimfIntellectual Property Rights: GeneralimfMeasurement of Economic GrowthimfAggregate ProductivityimfCross-Country Output ConvergenceimfEconomics of the ElderlyimfEconomics of the HandicappedimfNon-labor Market DiscriminationimfProductionimfCostimfCapital and Total Factor ProductivityimfCapacityimfLabor Force and Employment, Size, and StructureimfDemographic Economics: GeneralimfPopulation & demographyimfMacroeconomicsimfLabourimfincome economicsimfAgingimfTotal factor productivityimfLabor forceimfProductivityimfPopulation and demographicsimfPopulation agingimfIndustrial productivityimfLabor marketimfPopulationimfSpainimfAgingLabor supplyIndustrial productivityLaborProduction and Operations ManagementDemographyMacroeconomics: ProductionInnovationResearch and DevelopmentTechnological ChangeIntellectual Property Rights: GeneralMeasurement of Economic GrowthAggregate ProductivityCross-Country Output ConvergenceEconomics of the ElderlyEconomics of the HandicappedNon-labor Market DiscriminationProductionCostCapital and Total Factor ProductivityCapacityLabor Force and Employment, Size, and StructureDemographic Economics: GeneralPopulation & demographyMacroeconomicsLabourincome economicsAgingTotal factor productivityLabor forceProductivityPopulation and demographicsPopulation agingIndustrial productivityLabor marketPopulation305.26094Aiyar Shekhar1095044Ebeke Christian1449652DcWaIMFBOOK9910162926003321The Impact of Workforce Aging on European Productivity3648209UNINA
