The pageants commemorating departed citizens are often in themselves works of performance art. A grand obituary remains key to this Stygian passage. And no one writes them like New Orleanian John Pope. Collected here are not just simple, mindless recitations of schools and workplaces, marriages, and mourners bereft. These pieces in Getting Off at Elysian Fields are full-blooded life stories with accounts of great achievements, dubious dabblings, unavoidable foibles, relationships gone sour, and happenstances that turn out to be life-changing. To be sure, there are stories about Carnival monarchs, great philanthropists, and a few politicians. But because New Orleans embraces eccentric behavior, there are stories of people who colored way outside the lines. For instance, there was the doctor who used his plasma to make his flowers grow, and the philanthropist who took money she had put aside for a fur coat to underwrite the lawsuit that desegregated Tulane University. A letter carrier everyone loved turned out to have been a spy during World War II, and a fledgling lawyer changed his lifelong thoughts about race when he saw blind people going into a Christmas party through separate doors--one for white people and another for African Americans. Then there was the punctilious judge who got down on his hands and knees to edge his lawn--with scissors.Because New Orleans funerals are distinctive, the author includes accounts of four that he covered, complete with soulful singing and even some dancing. As a popular, local bumper sticker indisputably declares, 'New Orleans--We Put the Fun in Funeral'"--Provided by publisher.ObituariesLouisianaNew OrleansFuneral rites and ceremoniesLouisianaNew OrleansNew Orleans (La.)BiographyNew Orleans (La.)Social life and customsSourcesObituariesFuneral rites and ceremonies976.3/35BIO002000HIS036120bisacshPope John(Reporter),1639859Halverson Peter D.MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910807250303321Getting off at Elysian Fields3983122UNINA01342oam 2200241z- 450 99101587390033212-336-38190-7(CKB)3810000000046309(VLeBooks)9782336381909(EXLCZ)99381000000004630920220209c2015uuuu -u- -freTerritoires De Memoires: Interfaces Referentielles D'expressions Et D'affirmations SocietalesEditions L'Harmattan20151 online resource (1 p.)Logiques sociales2-343-06337-0 Les memoires territoriales sont physiques et se vivent sur l'ecorce terrestre souvent malmenee par l'homme. Elles sont les images des vestiges civilisationnels, des cultures, des structures institutionnelles que nos societes ancrent dans les sols et avec lesquelles nous composons pour produire nos memoires individuelles, collectives et societales. Ce livre dit l'importance de ces territoires avec lesquels nous vivons, par lesquels nous nous exprimons et nous affirmons une appartenance societale pour eviter de reproduire des erreurs trop souvent commises.Brun-Picard1746971BOOK9910158739003321Territoires De Memoires: Interfaces Referentielles D'expressions Et D'affirmations Societales4180396UNINA00956nam0-2200289 --450 991099449270332120250415113546.088-222-5476-7IT2006-785420250415d2006----kmuy0itay5050 baengIT 001yyPiranesi as interpreter of Roman architecture and the origins of his intellectual worldLola Kantor-Kazovsky[Firenze]Olschki2006310 p., [27] c. di tav.ill.21 cm.Pocket library of studies in art36Piranesi, Giambattista769.9221Kantor-Kazovsky,Lola1807802ITUNINAREICATUNIMARCBK9910994492703321769.945 PIRG 092025/2071FLFBCFLFBCPiranesi as interpreter of Roman architecture and the origins of his intellectual world4357743UNINA
