Consagró toda su vida a los indios de México y Guatemala a los que amó profundamente y defendió de la injusticia con la que eran tratados.Su obra es una de las más importantes para el conocimiento de la etnografía y la vida en el México de la conquista. La Historia de los indios de la Nueva España, se editó en 1848 (lord Kingsborough publicó algunos fragmentos).La primera edición íntegra apareció en 1858. Esta es una de las fuentes principales sobre la etnografía y la civilización de México en la época de la conquista. Aunque defiende la Conquista censura los abusos de los colonos.
