Written in a clear, accessible style, it presents key principles of teacher education and concrete examples from eight successful programs in Australia, Canada, and the United States. It extends constructivism beyond Piaget and Vygotsky to more recent theorists such as Barthes and Derrida, indicating how such an approach can lead to engaging, effective education. Clive Beck and Clare Kosnik advocate an approach to teacher education that is highly original, linking integration, community components, and inquiry to a degree not commonly found in preservice programs, and they show in detail how to implement these elements.SUNY series in teacher preparation and development.Student teachersTeachersTraining ofConstructivism (Education)Educational innovationsStudent teachers.TeachersTraining of.Constructivism (Education)Educational innovations.370/.71/1Beck Clive1182533Kosnik Clare Madott974621MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910953362003321Innovations in teacher education4353411UNINA05962oam 2200673 a 450 991095471390332120001117105901.097984006540399780313002748031300274610.5040/9798400654039(CKB)111056486885372(OCoLC)70741570(CaPaEBR)ebrary10020807(SSID)ssj0000158313(PQKBManifestationID)11162482(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000158313(PQKBWorkID)10144568(PQKB)11061544(Au-PeEL)EBL3000701(CaPaEBR)ebr10020807(OCoLC)55142711(OCoLC)1438945290(DLC)BP9798400654039BC(MiAaPQ)EBC3000701(Perlego)4202274(EXLCZ)9911105648688537220000328e20002024 uy 0engurcn|||||||||txtccrThe French in the United States an ethnographic study /Jacqueline Lindenfeld1st ed.Westport, Conn. :Praeger,2000.London :Bloomsbury Publishing,20241 online resource (183 p.) Written by a French-born American anthropologist who has insider status among French Americans, The French in the United States offers a fresh look at the histories and experiences of French immigrants. In the foreign-born generation, a high degree of social integration into American society co-exists with the maintenance of a French identity which manifests itself in the areas of language, culture, and perceptions. The French heritage does not usually endure past the second generation, however, because its maintenance within the family is not adequately supported by collective efforts, due to a lack of cohesiveness among French-born individuals who have become permanent immigrants. A number of factors account for the foregoing: the small number of French natives in the United States, their scattered geographical distribution, the absence of spatially defined communities populated by direct immigrants from France, and a very high rate of intermarriage. Another important factor is the primarily individual nature of migration from France to this country since the last half of the 20th century, and a highly developed sense of self-direction in those who stay permanently. Their French identity must be regarded as cultural rather than ethnic: it is tied to a distant homeland, rather than to a group with territorial, institutional, and organizational identity in the United States. Lindenfeld delves into the makings of this French identity and distinguishes French immigrants from other Americans.
