Dans les années d’après-guerre, marqué par quatre ans passés sur le front, il s’ouvre aux idées de l’Action française et remet en cause le système de la nation armée dans des articles originaux. « Analyste » au 2e bureau de l’état-major de l’armée puis attaché militaire près de l’ambassade de France en Espagne au premier jour de la guerre civile, le lieutenant-colonel Morel détonne par ses opinions antifascistes. En 1938, il suggère au président du Conseil, Léon Blum, d’intervenir militairement en faveur des républicains espagnols et s’oppose au haut commandement de l’armée française dans sa grande majorité favorable au général Franco. Lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Henri Morel est l’un des rares officiers à suivre le général de Lattre de Tassigny, lorsque celui-ci tente de résister à l’invasion de la zone libre par les troupes allemandes. Arrêté puis déporté en Allemagne en juillet 1944, il meurt au camp de Neuengamme. Cet ouvrage retrace la carrière d’un officier atypique dont les analyses sur la guerre d’Espagne se sont souvent avérées d’une surprenante justesse.
