Histories of Eating -- Conclusion -- Notes -- Bibliography -- IndexThis richly drawn ethnography of Samburu cattle herders in northern Kenya examines the effects of an epochal shift in their basic diet-from a regimen of milk, meat, and blood to one of purchased agricultural products. In his innovative analysis, Jon Holtzman uses food as a way to contextualize and measure the profound changes occurring in Samburu social and material life. He shows that if Samburu reaction to the new foods is primarily negative-they are referred to disparagingly as "gray food" and "government food"-it is also deeply ambivalent. For example, the Samburu attribute a host of social maladies to these dietary changes, including selfishness and moral decay. Yet because the new foods save lives during famines, the same individuals also talk of the triumph of reason over an antiquated culture and speak enthusiastically of a better life where there is less struggle to find food. Through detailed analysis of a range of food-centered arenas, Uncertain Tastes argues that the experience of food itself-symbolic, sensuous, social, and material-is intrinsically characterized by multiple and frequently conflicting layers.ACLS Fellows' Publications.Memory, ambivalence, and the politics of eating in Samburu, northern KenyaSamburu (African people)FoodSamburu (African people)Domestic animalsSamburu (African people)Social conditionsFood habitsKenyaSamburu DistrictFood preferencesKenyaSamburu DistrictFoodSymbolic aspectsKenyaSamburu DistrictCulture conflictKenyaSamburu DistrictSocial changeKenyaSamburu DistrictSamburu District (Kenya)Social conditionsSamburu District (Kenya)Economic conditionsafrican culture.agricultural products.agriculture.anthropology.basic diet.blood.cattle.cultural studies.eating.ethnography.famines.food.gastronomy.government food.gray food.kenya.kenyan culture.loikop.lokop.meat.milk.moral decay.nilotic people.north central kenya.northern kenya.pastoralists.samburu cattle herders.samburu culture.samburu material life.samburu social life.samburu tribe.samburu.selfishness.semi nomadic.struggle for food.Samburu (African people)Food.Samburu (African people)Domestic animals.Samburu (African people)Social conditions.Food habitsFood preferencesFoodSymbolic aspectsCulture conflictSocial change641.30089/965Holtzman Jon1474518MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910778403403321Uncertain tastes3688278UNINA05116nam 22011895 450 991079197840332120230725021425.01-283-27787-597866132778790-520-94876-910.1525/9780520948761(CKB)2560000000072779(EBL)685412(OCoLC)719321909(SSID)ssj0000522839(PQKBManifestationID)11340820(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000522839(PQKBWorkID)10539001(PQKB)11298824(StDuBDS)EDZ0000083836(DE-B1597)518882(OCoLC)1110707683(DE-B1597)9780520948761(MiAaPQ)EBC685412(EXLCZ)99256000000007277920200424h20112011 fg engur|n|---|||||txtccrThe General's Slow Retreat Chile after Pinochet /Mary Helen SpoonerBerkeley, CA : University of California Press, [2011]©20111 online resource (350 p.)Description based upon print version of record.0-520-25613-1 Includes bibliographical references and index.Frontmatter -- Contents -- Illustrations -- Acknowledgments -- Introduction -- 1. Chile, Post-Pinochet -- A Chilean Chronology -- Notes -- Bibliography -- IndexIn her acclaimed book Soldiers in a Narrow Land, Mary Helen Spooner took us inside the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. Carrying Chile's story up to the present, she now offers this vivid account of how Chile rebuilt its democracy after 17 years of military rule-with the former dictator watching, and waiting, from the sidelines. Spooner discusses the major players, events, and institutions in Chile's recent political history, delving into such topics as the environmental situation, the economy, and the election of Michelle Bachelet. Throughout, she examines Pinochet's continuing influence on public life as she tells how he grudgingly ceded power, successfully fought investigations into his human rights record and finances, kept command of the army for eight years after leaving the presidency, was detained on human rights charges, and died without being convicted of any of the many serious crimes of which he was accused. Chile has now become one of South America's greatest economic and political successes, but as we find in The General's Slow Retreat, it remains a country burdened with a painful past.Chile -- Politics and government -- 1988-Chile - Politics and government - 1988-Democratization - ChileDemocratization -- ChilePinochet Ugarte, AugustoPinochet Ugarte, AugustoDemocratizationChileGovernment - Non-U.SHILCCLaw, Politics & GovernmentHILCCGovernment - Central & South AmericaHILCCChilePolitics and government1988-army.biographical.campaign.chile.crime.democracy.dictator.elections.exile.female politicians.free speech.government.history.human rights.independence.justice.latin america.martial law.michelle bachelet.military action.military coup.nonfiction.pinochet.political history.political power.politics.power.president.rebellion.resistance.revolution.trial.war crimes.Chile -- Politics and government -- 1988-.Chile - Politics and government - 1988-.Democratization - Chile.Democratization -- Chile.Pinochet Ugarte, Augusto.Pinochet Ugarte, Augusto.DemocratizationGovernment - Non-U.S.Law, Politics & GovernmentGovernment - Central & South America983.06/6Spooner Mary Helen, authttp://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut994769DE-B1597DE-B1597BOOK9910791978403321The General's Slow Retreat3711753UNINA
