El auge de la prensa y el surgimiento del romanticismo. Como muchos autores románticos, Larra combinó sus actividades periodísticas y literarias con su interés en la política. Fue un escritor comprometido en el sentido más moderno y completo del término.Larra cultivó diferentes géneros literarios, pero es más conocido por sus artículos periodísticos, escritos bajo el seudónimo de Fígaro o el de El pobrecito hablador. Su actividad periodística puede clasificarse en artículos de costumbres, artículos literarios y artículos políticos.Larra sufrió tal vez más que otros intelectuales, el choque entre ideal y realidad. Vivió en la primera mitad del siglo XIX, sobrevivió a la muerte del absolutismo encarnado en la figura de Fernando VII.Algunos de los autores de la generación del 98, se identificaron con él, por su forma de sentir intensamente los males de su país, su idealismo y también su pesimismo. Larra no era no solo un escritor romántico, sino también un hombre moderno.
