In Exile Memories and the Dutch Revolt , Johannes Müller shows how migrants and their descendants in the Dutch Republic, England and Germany cultivated their Netherlandish heritage for more than 200 years. Memories of war and persecution shaped new religious and political identities that combined images of suffering and heroism and served as foundational narratives of newcomers. Exposing the underlying narrative structures of early modern exile memories, this volume shows how stories about the Dutch Revolt allowed migrants to participate in their host societies rather than producing a closed and exclusive diaspora. While narratives of religious persecution attracted non-migrants as well, exile networks were able to connect newcomers and established residents.Studies in medieval and Reformation traditions ;Volume 199.MemorySocial aspectsGermanyHistoryMemorySocial aspectsEnglandHistoryDutchMigrationsHistoryDutchEnglandEthnic identityHistoryDutchGermanyEthnic identityHistoryExilesEnglandHistoryExilesGermanyHistoryWar and societyNetherlandsHistoryNetherlandsHistoryEighty Years' War, 1568-1648Social aspectsNetherlandsHistoryEighty Years' War, 1568-1648RefugeesElectronic books.MemorySocial aspectsHistory.MemorySocial aspectsHistory.DutchMigrationsHistory.DutchHistory.DutchEthnic identityHistory.ExilesHistory.ExilesHistory.War and societyHistory.949.2/03Müller Johannes(Johannes M.),1980-1066535MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910511418003321Exile memories and the Dutch revolt2549374UNINA01274nam--2200349---450 99000328518020331620220520121516.0960-204-017-3000328518USA01000328518(ALEPH)000328518USA0100032851820090701d2001----km-y0itay50------baengGRa---||||001yyFrom Pentelicon to the Parthenonthe ancient quarries and the story of a half-worked column capital of the first marble ParthenonM.
