This leather can be subjected to home laundering up to 40˚C (104˚F) as well as commercial dry cleaning without damage. The tanning process used for this hide decreases the environmental impact of tanning, by eliminating toxins in water effluent, and creates leather that does not contain processing residues that may be harmful. This leather utilizes a recent development in tanning techniques, ‘wet white’ tanning. This process utilizes bio-based enzymatic processes to tan the hides, rather than the mix of minerals, salts, and acid used in chrome tanning. Wet white tanning gets its name from the resultant color of the leather after processing, an off white; while chrome tanning is referred to as wet blue as the hides in are imparted with a bluish tint. The leather is sold by the half or full hide, ranging from 25 to 50 ft² (2.3 to 4.6 m²), with thicknesses ranging from 0.4 to 3.6 mm (0.02 to 0.14 in). Six standard colors are offered, natural, black, blue, yellow, fuchsia, and orange. The color will darken upon application of heat. Color matching to any Pantone color is available; with a minimum batch quantity of 200 m² (2153 ft²). Secondary processes also provide custom options with printing, hot printing, embossing, wax treatments and other finishing techniques. The leather has been certified to OEKO TEX Standard 100 with a Class 1 ranking, it contains less than than the required threshold for heavy metal and chemical presence and is safe for use in applications that children and babies may come in contact with.
