Rogaski focuses on multiple manifestations across time of a single Chinese concept, weisheng-which has been rendered into English as "hygiene," "sanitary," "health," or "public health"-as it emerged in the complex treaty-port environment of Tianjin. Before the late nineteenth century, weisheng was associated with diverse regimens of diet, meditation, and self-medication. Hygienic Modernity reveals how meanings of weisheng, with the arrival of violent imperialism, shifted from Chinese cosmology to encompass such ideas as national sovereignty, laboratory knowledge, the cleanliness of bodies, and the fitness of races: categories in which the Chinese were often deemed lacking by foreign observers and Chinese elites alike.Asia--local studies/global themes.Health behaviorChinaPublic healthChinaElectronic books.Health behaviorPublic health362.1/0951/09034Rogaski Ruth1016633MiAaPQMiAaPQMiAaPQBOOK9910450355403321Hygienic modernity2379524UNINA02270nas 2200649-a 450 991014596870332120231101154422.01989-1342(OCoLC)712778438(CKB)1000000000429409(CONSER)--2011243266(NjHacI)991000000000429409(DE-599)ZDB2443288 X(EXLCZ)99100000000042940920080829a20089999 --- -engur|||||||||||txtrdacontentnrdamediacrrdacarrierJournal of optometryMadrid Colegio Nacional de Ópticos-Optometristas de EspañaBarcelona Elsevier DoymaMadrid :Colegio Nacional de Ópticos-Optometristas de España,2008.Barcelona :Elsevier Doyma,2008.1 online resourceRefereed/Peer-reviewed1888-4296 The Journal of Optometry welcomes the submission of original manuscripts and reviews describing clinical and experimental research in the field of Optometry, Ophthalmic Optics, Ocular Surface and Basic and Applied Visual Science in general; research on Instruments and Techniques, Reports of Clinical Cases, and clinically relevant laboratory investigations are also welcomed.J OPTOMJ OptomEyeDiseasesfast(OCoLC)fst00919133Optometryfast(OCoLC)fst01046944OptometryPeriodicalsRefractive Surgical ProceduresEyeDiseasesPeriodicalsEye DiseasesOptometryOphthalmologyPeriodical.Periodicals.fastEyeDiseases.Optometry.OptometryRefractive Surgical Procedures.EyeDiseasesEye Diseases.Optometry.Ophthalmology.617.7Colegio Nacional de Opticos-Optometristas de España.NjHacINjHaclJOURNAL9910145968703321Journal of optometry2245703UNINA
