Au cours des vingt dernières années, une nouvelle méthode d’étude du développement économique a émergé : l’approche expérimentale. Elle consiste à évaluer les politiques de lutte contre la pauvreté au moyen d’expériences pilotes menées avec la rigueur des essais cliniques. Quinze ans après sa première leçon inaugurale, Esther Duflo dresse le bilan des succès et des échecs de ces politiques dans le monde. Malgré des évolutions constatées dans certains domaines, nous sommes aujourd’hui à un point de bascule : la pauvreté augmente et les conséquences du réchauffement climatique, dont les pays les plus défavorisés seront les premières victimes, menacent d’effacer la plupart des gains que nous pensions acquis.
