En 1945, le romancier F. Scott Fitzgerald écrivait : « Montrez-moi un héros, je vous écrirai une tragédie. » Cette phrase aurait pu être écrite à propos de Paul Triquet. Seul Canadien français à avoir obtenu la croix de Victoria pour un fait d'armes accompli en Italie durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale, ce simple soldat est poussé sous les feux de la rampe pour en faire un exemple. Mais on ne devient pas un héros impunément. L'histoire de Triquet révèle le cynisme des autorités militaires qui retouchent à petits traits sa vie pour en faire une légende qui cadre mieux avec leurs visées : stimuler l'effort de guerre et encourager l'enrôlement. Le costume de héros est toutefois un peu trop grand, et de l'avoir endossé laissera des séquelles douloureuses non seulement dans la vie privée et professionnelle de Triquet, mais aussi dans l'histoire militaire canadienne. |
