Aurelio Agostino (354-430 d.C.), una delle figure più importanti nello sviluppo del cristianesimo occidentale e della filosofia, era figlio di un pagano, Patrizio di Tagaste, e della sua moglie cristiana, Monnica. Studiando per diventare retore, cadde in un turbine di dubbi filosofici e psicologici, che lo portarono al manicheismo. Nel 383 si trasferì a Roma e poi a Milano per insegnare retorica. Nonostante esplorasse i sistemi filosofici classici, in particolare scetticismo e neoplatonismo, i suoi studi sulle lettere di Paolo insieme all’amico Alipio, e la predicazione del vescovo Ambrogio, portarono nel 386 alla sua importante conversione dalle credenze miste al cristianesimo. Presto tornò a Tagaste e fondò una comunità religiosa, e nel 395 o 396 divenne vescovo di Ippona.Il Maestro (De Magistro) risale all’inizio della carriera accademica di Agostino, e Insegnare il cristianesimo (De Doctrina Christiana) alla sua fine. Insieme alle Confessioni, questi trattati contengono vari ricordi e riflessioni. |
