In The Atlantic Realists, intellectual historian Matthew Specter offers a boldly revisionist interpretation of "realism," a prevalent stance in post-WWII US foreign policy and public discourse and the dominant international relations theory during the Cold War. Challenging the common view of realism as a set of universally binding truths about international affairs, Specter argues that its major features emerged from a century-long dialogue between American and German intellectuals beginning in the late nineteenth century. Nato nel XVII arrondissement da genitori originari del Sud degli Stati Uniti, in bilico fra due lingue e due culture, Julien Green ha fatto di Parigi la sola vera patria, oggetto di una amorosa contemplazione e di una stupefatta tenerezza. Nessuno meglio di lui poteva dunque non già raccontarci le eclatanti meraviglie di cui vanno a caccia i turisti, ma svelarci un’anima che non si lascia cogliere facilmente, una città segreta e inaccessibile che «appartiene ai sognatori» disposti a girovagare senza problemi di tempo, e quella inesplicabile qualità che di fronte alla più umile delle immagini, come la «fila di libri malconci nel cassone di un bouquiniste», ci fa dire senza esitazione: «Questa è Parigi». Una qualità che Julien Green, grazie al suo contagioso amour fou, riesce miracolosamente a trascrivere, a raffigurare con le parole, convincendoci che non vale la pena di «affrontare le turbolenze degli aeroporti e la noia delle crociere per andare a cercare dall’altra parte del mondo, in mezzo alle folle o nei pochi luoghi deserti che restano,» |
