Rasantes Wachstum, provokante kulturelle Avantgarden, die Infragestellung von Geschlechterrollen oder neue Industrien und Vergnügungen prägten bereits das wilhelminische Berlin. Ermöglicht wurden diese Entwicklungen auch durch Konsummöglichkeiten und technische Innovationen, die auf der Verfügbarkeit von Kolonialwaren beruhten. Dafür schuf sich das Kaiserreich seit den 1880er Jahren »eigene« koloniale Räume. Weniger bekannt dagegen sind die früheren materiellen und immateriellen Verflechtungen mit Kolonien anderer europäischer Mächte. Die Beiträger*innen zeigen, wie von dort aus immer mehr Rohstoffe, Heilpflanzen und Genussmittel nach Berlin gelangten – und seitdem koloniale Fantasien und Sehnsüchte viele Dimensionen der Stadt durchdringen. |
