Noches lúgubres, publicada originalmente por entregas en El Correo de Madrid en 1771, es sin duda la obra más famosa de Cadalso y, seguramente, el primer texto romántico europeo, pues con él se inaugura el tama romántico del suicidio, así como el primer poema en prosa de la literatura española. Nos versa la historia de Tediato, que dialoga con Lorenzo, el sepulturero del cementerio donde yace enterrada su amada. Durante tres noches seguidas, Tediato pretende desenterrar su cadáver para llevarlo a cas y suicidarse junto a ella. Se añade a esta edición su Autobiografía, texto breve prácticamente inédito hasta 1962, donde Cadalso trata, en términos poco favorables, entre otras cosas, sobre personajes poderosos de su época, como el conde Aranda, por lo que su difusión en vida hubiera sido de lo más arriesgado para el autor. La historia personal, el activismo patriótico y el atrevimiento crítico convirtieron a José Cadalso, literato y militar, a caballo entre el Neoclasicismo y el Romanticismo, en una figura imprescindible de nuestra literatura.
