Questo volume riguarda Teofrasto, allievo e successore di Aristotele come capo della Scuola Peripatetica. L'attenzione è duplice. In primo luogo, si tratta di scoperte e invenzioni, utili e piacevoli, e più in generale di cambiamenti che hanno trasformato il modo in cui le persone vivono. Teofrasto ha scritto un'opera intitolata Sulle scoperte, che può essere considerata come storia culturale. In secondo luogo, il volume si concentra sui proverbi: detti familiari contenenti verità utili che sono state osservate dalle generazioni precedenti e trasmesse in una forma concisa e attraente. Teofrasto ha scritto un'opera intitolata Sui proverbi e ha fatto uso di proverbi nei suoi scritti sull'etica, la retorica e l'umorismo. Ha riconosciuto la loro importanza nell'educazione dei giovani e nel mantenere le tradizioni di un'età precedente. |
