• Sommario/riassunto: Concepts of ‘balance’ have been central to modern politics, medicine and society. Yet, while many health, environmental and social challenges are discussed globally in terms of imbalances in biological, social and ecological systems, strategies for addressing modern excesses and deficiencies have focused almost exclusively on the agency of the individual. Balancing the Self explores the diverse ways in which balanced and unbalanced selfhoods have been subject to construction, intervention and challenge across the long twentieth century. Through original chapters on subjects as varied as obesity control, fatigue and the regulation of work, and the physiology of exploration in extreme conditions, the volume analyses how concepts of balance and rhetorics of empowerment and responsibility have historically been used for a variety of purposes, by a diversity of political and social agencies. Historicising present-day concerns, as well as uncovering the previously hidden interests of the past, this volume’s wide-ranging discussions of health governance, subjectivity and balance will be of interest to historians of medicine, sociologists, ; social policy analysts, and social and political historians alike.

• Sommario/riassunto: Zentral ist den Marx'schen Texten die Nähe von Trauma und Ökonomie; darin besteht ihre unerhörte Modernität. Zwar spricht auch Marx die Sprache der Metaphysik. Aber durch sie hindurch kündigt sich bei ihm eine Erfahrung an, die die ökonomische Ordnung als differentielles Gefüge von Texten entzifferbar macht. Es verlangt nach Begriffen, die ebenso »semiotisch« wie »grammatologisch« sind und nicht zuletzt mit einer »marxistischen Metaphysik« brechen. Heute treffen diese Begriffe auf das Diktat einer »globalisierten« Ökonomie, den Verfall des Politischen, auf Diskurse des Krieges, der Medien und der Psyche und nicht zuletzt auf die Bürokratien der Systemtheorie. Entscheidend sind jedoch nicht solche regionalen Verfassungen von Wissen, Technik und Macht. Entscheidend ist, wie sie hervorgebracht werden und welche »Arbeit der Differenz« sie praktisch dekonstruieren kann. Hier allerdings begegnen sich Marx, Heidegger und Derrida. Deren Rendezvous macht eine erneute Lektüre der Marx'schen Texte nötig - »; hier« und »jetzt«, unter dem Diktat einer »Globalisierung« und nach dem Sturz staatlicher Systeme, die sich auf Marx beriefen.; »Hauptanliegen des Werkes ist es, Marx' Text - singulär durch seine 'Dekonstruktion' der hegemonialen Sprache - einzubringen gegen die neoliberale Globalisierung. Die Dringlichkeit dieser Auseinandersetzung steht außer Zweifel, denn der Neoliberalismus 'lässt keine Zeit'.
