Drawing on ecocritical analysis, posthumanist theory, archival research and environmental history, this book resituates key works of modernist fiction within the ecological moment of the early twentieth century, a period in which new configurations of the relationship between human life and the natural world were migrating between the sciences, philosophy and literary culture. The author makes the case that the early twentieth century is pivotal in our understanding of the Anthropocene both as a planetary epoch and a critical concept. In doing so, he positions James Joyce, Djuna Barnes and Virginia Woolf as theorists of the modernist Anthropocene, showing how their oeuvres are shaped by, and actively respond to, changing ideas about the nonhuman that continue to reverberate today.

• Sommario/riassunto: Les célébrations du 400e anniversaire de la fondation de Québec ont rappelé non seulement la naissance d’une ville, mais aussi celle de tout un peuple, issu de la colonisation française. Il y a 400 ans, la France s’est établie de façon permanente et continue sur les bords du Saint-Laurent et, depuis, elle n’a jamais cessé d’y être présente. C’est cette longue relation avec le Canada, et en particulier avec le Québec, qui fait l’objet de ce livre. Après 400 ans, quel bilan pouvons-nous faire ? Quels rapports la France a-t-elle entretenus avec la Nouvelle-France ? Quelle a été son attitude envers l’ancienne colonie après la cession de 1763 ? Comment, à quel rythme et avec quelle intensité se sont maintenus et développés les liens entre Français, Canadiens et Québécois ? Autant de questions auxquelles tentent de répondre dans ce livre douze historiens des deux côtés de l’Atlantique.
