La légende du roi Arthur est surtout connue à travers les romans français de la Table ronde. On ignore souvent qu'il existe des récits latins du xiiie siècle qui racontent quelques épisodes inédits de cette grande saga bretonne, inconnus des œuvres arthuriennes françaises ou étrangères. Le présent ouvrage en offre la première traduction intégrale en français accompagnée du texte original en latin. Dans l'un de ces récits (Arthur et Gorlagon), le roi Arthur rencontre un bien étrange loup garou. Dans un autre (La véritable histoire de la mort d'Arthur), il disparaît dans des circonstances mystérieuses à la fin de sa vie terrestre. L'histoire de son neveu (L'Enfance de Gauvain) est tout aussi surprenante : abandonné à sa naissance, il accomplit un singulier parcours héroïque avant de retrouver la cour d'Arthur, tout auréolé de gloire chevaleresque. développe en une véritable chronique légendaire aux rebondissements haletants. Le présent ouvrage vaudra au lecteur de multiples découvertes car ces récits ne sont pas des affabulations inventées au Moyen Âge. Ils remontent à une tradition orale bien plus ancienne : la vieille mythologie des Celtes insulaires (Irlande, Pays de Galles) qui offre de surprenantes analogies avec celle de l'ancienne Grèce ou avec les contes du folklore international. |
