The revision retains foundational, original material from the frequently-cited 1974 volume but is completely updated throughout. As with the earlier version, the author hopes to take the reader 'from the beginnings of the subject to the frontiers of research'. • Sommario/riassunto: Parmi les agents du prince, les châtelains n'ont guère retenu l'attention de l'historiographie. Le présent volume, qui rassemble les textes des communications présentées lors de la table ronde franco-italienne de Chambéry d'octobre 2001, entend combler une lacune en mettant en avant une figure d'officiers dont le rôle a été essentiel dans l'histoire de la construction des administrations d'État, de la territorialisation du pouvoir princier et de la constitution des sociétés politiques régionales à la fin du Moyen Âge. La comparaison entre principautés françaises et villes-États d'Italie du Nord permet de faire ressortir parmi les châtelains une grande variété de profils, qui ne répond pas seulement à des logiques géographiques. Initialement homme de guerre puisqu'il était attaché à un château, le châtelain a souvent revêtu d'autres visages, de l'administrateur au juge, du receveur à l'enquêteur. Si la vocation militaire a favorisé un recrutement nobiliaire, seigneurial et rural, la fonction n'a pas été l'apanage de la seule noblesse. Parce que la charge de châtelain a parfois été concédée à des créanciers du prince, les élites urbaines ne l'ont pas négligée. Pour le prince, l'office de châtelain a souvent été pensé comme un instrument politique de fidélisation des élites régionales. Plus largement, à travers les différents exemples qu'il étudie, ce livre se veut une réflexion sur les relations entre pratique de l'office, service administratif et pouvoir princier au Moyen Âge tardif.
