Gegenstand des Buches sind jüdische Friedhöfe des mittelalterlichen Reichs, die über Jahrzehnte, oft sogar Jahrhunderte hinweg bestanden. Das Studium dieser religiös exklusiven Orte ermöglicht es, den Umgang mit der jüdisch-christlichen Differenz in seinem überaus weiten Möglichkeitsspektrum zu erfassen. Rekonstruiert werden die Begräbnisstätten mittels ihrer fünf wesentlichen Elemente: Fläche, Einfriedung, Tote, Grabsteine und Besucher. Dabei bietet die Konzentration auf ausgewählte Orte der Bestattung die Chance, neben den spektakulären Momenten der interreligiösen Begegnung auch jene Teile der Wirklichkeit zu erfassen, die in ihrer Alltäglichkeit gewöhnlich unterbelichtet bleiben und oft bereits in der Aufmerksamkeit der Zeitgenossen im Hintergrund standen. Das Buch, das den mittelalterlichen jüdischen Friedhof erstmals monographisch behandelt, zeigt, dass die Begräbnisstätten der religiösen Minderheit keineswegs primär Orte des Konflikts waren, an denen sich also die religiöse Differenz als besonders problematisch erwiesen hätte. Stattdessen bietet es Einblick in eine multireligiöse Gesellschaft, in der jüdische und



christliche Lebensräume zumeist auf selbstverständliche Weise mit- und nebeneinander existierten.
