Why did Europe experience industrialisation and modern economic growth before China, India or Japan? This is one of the most fundamental questions in Economic History and one that has provoked intense debate. Il tema del peccato e della penitenza è venuto assumendo negli ultimi decenni, non solo nell'ambito della storia della Chiesa ma in quello più largo della storia della sensibilità occidentale, una collocazione sempre più rilevante. Il volume s'inserisce in questo clima di nuova attenzione, tracciando l'evoluzione del sacramento della penitenza fra il tredicesimo secolo, allorché il IV concilio lateranense (1215) stabilì l'obbligo della confessione almeno una volta all'anno, e la nuova disciplina della Controriforma. L'autore identifica le caratteristiche peculiari della confessione basso-medievale studiando la dottrina teologica e canonistica, e indagando la prassi pastorale. In particolare mette a fuoco il fissarsi della procedura (analizzata attraverso la diffusione dei manuali per la confessione) e mostra il ruolo primario che i frati degli ordini mendicanti, più preparati e colti del clero |
