• Sommario/riassunto: Dans son Contrat social, Rousseau noue définitivement l'articulation entre société, souveraineté et sujétion. Simplement l'évoquer, c'est d'un seul trait mettre en place tout un champ d'analyse : la production sociétale de l'État. Même s'il porte sur des situations et des expériences antérieures au moment du contrat rousseauiste, et qu'il ne prétende aucunement établir entre celui-ci et celles-là un quelconque lien généalogique, cet ouvrage prend bien place dans ce champ. Mais davantage à la manière d'un rappel : le Moyen Âge a connu lui aussi une certaine articulation entre société, souveraineté et sujétion. Elle est obtenue dans la plupart des cas, y compris dans les régimes politiques a priori les plus réfractaires à cette idée et à cette pratique, par le contrat. C'est ce passage obligé, qui fait continuum dans la société et la structure de manière proprement politique, que désigne l'expression « contrat politique ». Elle pointe aussi un rapport de stricte synonymie entre société politique et société contractuelle. Elle signale enfin un temps d'ouverture et d'expérience des possibles, dont l'historien doit tenir compte s'il ne veut pas manquer un maillon fondamental de l'histoire de la souveraineté. Ce sont ce passage, ce rapport et ce temps, dont la conjonction produit parfois une virtualité politique du nom de République, qu'entreprend d'analyser ce livre collectif. Il est le dernier acte de l'enquête lancée en 2004 par François Foronda. Jusqu'à présent centrée sur la Castille et la péninsule Ibérique, cette enquête prend ici toute sa dimension européenne, grâce à la collaboration d'une trentaine d'historiens, spécialistes de l'Italie, de l'Empire, de la France, de l'Angleterre et des Espagnes au Moyen Âge.
