"Sundry letters patents, commissions, and proclamations touching the ordering of alehouse keepers and the manufacture of gold and silver thread have been abused by the grantees. These are withdrawn. All inns, &c., shall be governed as if these powers had never been in existence. Alehouse keepers put down by the Justices of Peace who have obtained licences from the grantees are to surrender them, paying nothing on their account." -- Steele. |
