Sinja Rist untersucht die Auswirkungen von Mikroplastik, das in marinen Sedimenten weltweit verbreitet ist, auf die Grünlippmuschel Perna viridis. Sie zeigt, dass nach einer 6-wöchigen Exposition im Labor mit steigender Partikelzahl starke Einschränkungen physiologischer Funktionen wie Filtration, Atmung, Bewegung und Byssusproduktion sowie eine erhöhte Mortalität auftreten. Signifikante Effekte waren dabei schon bei geringen Partikelmengen messbar. Insgesamt lassen die Ergebnisse dieser Studie auf eine deutliche Dezimierung der Energiereserven der Muscheln schließen. Die Kontamination der Partikel mit dem organischen Schadstoff Fluoranthen hatte dagegen keinen eindeutig messbaren Effekt auf die Tiere.
