Note generali

Attributed to João Rodrigues de Sá e Meneses Penaguião. Cf. BLC.

The two works were also published separately as "Penegyricus Cromwelli" and "Panegyricus clarissimo Anglorum imperatori Olivero Cromwello scriptus."  The Portuguese ambassador, perhaps the author of the first, was João Rodrigues de Sá e Menezes, conde de Penaguião, but the second has also been ascribed to him, possibly through an ambiguous note in the Thomason tracts catalogue : "This Panegyrick was written by the Chaplain to the Portugall Embassador," i.e. J. R. de Sá e Meneses' (I, 96).

The two tracts, especially the second, have also been attributed to Milton, but "the Miltonic connection is chimerical in the highest degree" (Columbia Milton, XVIII, 638).

With a final blank leaf.

Annotation on Thomason copy: "Louis Elzever Leyden"; "May".

Reproduction of the original in the British Library.
