Publication information suggested by ESTC.

"STC suggests a publication date of 1538, based on the date in the title page border. However, Becon's 1543 recantation, which denounced all of his other works then in print, makes no mention of this work. In 'The iewel of ioye' [London, 1550] sig. E2v he claims that the 'The gouernans of vertue' was written during his northern exile after the recantation. In a later edition of 'The gouernans of vertue' London, [1560?] (STC 1726) sig. A8r he claims that it was first written and published in the early 1540s, and during 'the bloudy boistrous burning time, when the reading of the holye Bible ... was forbidden the poore laye people' apparently meaning after the 1543 Act for the Advancement of True Religion. A date of 1544 or possibly 1545 for the first edition therefore seems likely."--ESTC.
