The ship Elizabeth, owned by Joseph Hawes and Company, was captured by the Spanish fleet while on a voyage to Virginia in 1637. The petitioners, as next of kin, seek recompense from money taken from the ship St. Clare and deposited with Parliament. In addition to their petition, the pamphlet contains other documents showing the history of the case including a proclamation for encouragement of trade to Virginia. |
