Über sieben Millionen Erwachsene lesen und schreiben so rudimentär, dass sie mit Texten nicht eigenständig umgehen können. Der Ergebnisband versammelt alle bisherigen Analysen einschließlich der methodischen Vorgehensweise der Repräsentativstudie. Er legt Differenzierungen zur Lebenssituation, zur Erwerbstätigkeit, Weiterbildung, Migration, Alter und Geschlecht vor. Hinsichtlich der Kompetenzniveaus (Alpha-Levels), Lebenssituation, Schulerfahrung und Erwerbsstatus werden die Ergebnisse der Adressatenstudie leo. mit der Teilnahmestudie ; AlphaPanel verglichen. Mit dem Begriff funktionaler Analphabetismus folgt leo. dem Gedanken des strategischen Essentialismus. Für strategische Belange eignet sich der Begriff, weil er Aufmerksamkeit erzeugt und den horizontalen Zusammenschluss begünstigt. Für pädagogische Belange ist er ungeeignet: Ankündigungstexte kommen gut ohne Defizitbegriffe wie Analphabetismus, Legasthenie, Schwäche oder Behinderung aus.
