Why did the novel become so popular in the past three centuries, and how did the American novel contribute to this trend? As a key provider of the narrative frames and formulas needed by modern individuals to give meaning and mooring to their lives. Drawing on phenomenological hermeneutics, human geography and social psychology, Laura Bieger contends that belonging is not a given; it is continuously produced by narrative. Against the current emphasis on metaphors of movement and destabilization, she explores the salience and significance of home. Challenging views of narrative as a mechanism of ideology, she approaches narrative as a practical component of dwelling in the world - and the novel a primary place-making agent. |

En 1927, l'auteur des Croix de bois, qui a déjà publié un récit de voyage en Indochine, s'embarque pour le Moyen-Orient pour le compte d'une revue littéraire française. En trois mois, il parcourt l'Égypte, la Syrie et le Liban ainsi que la Palestine, suivant ainsi le parcours rendu célèbre par Chateaubriand, Nerval et Lamartine au siècle précédent. Pourtant, bien des choses ont changé depuis l'ère romantique : l'Empire ottoman n'est plus, la Syrie et le Liban sont désormais sous mandat français et la Palestine est métamorphosée par l'installation massive des Sionistes. Dans ce récit de voyage haut en couleur mais hanté par la mémoire littéraire de ses prédécesseurs, Roland Dorgelès expose avec la verve qui le caractérise ses émerveillements et ses désillusions devant un Moyen-Orient en pleine mutation. Précédé d'une préface et complété par des notes explicatives et un dossier critique de Maéva Bovio, éditrice du texte, ce livre est la première réédition de La Caravane sans chameaux depuis 1948. |
