Die Regierungszeit Karls des Kühnen von Burgund (1465/67-1477) zählt zu den Wendezeiten der europäischen Geschichte. Im Dauerkonflikt mit seinen Lehnsherren, König Ludwig XI. von Frankreich und Kaiser Friedrich III., strebte Karl nach eigenständiger Herrschaft über den reichen burgundischen Länderkomplex und darüber hinaus nach einer Königskrone oder gar dem römischen Kaisertum. Im Mittelpunkt des Buches stehen die Beziehungen Burgunds zum Kaiser und den deutschen Fürsten vor allem im Westen des Reiches.



Besonderes Augenmerk gilt der diplomatischen Praxis und dem Zeremoniell. Im Bewusstsein der Überlegenheit französisch-burgundischer Hofkultur, Administration und militärischer Technik versäumte es Karl der Kühne, sich in dem Maß Verbündete im Reich zu schaffen, wie er sie zur Verwirklichung seiner hochfliegenden Pläne benötigt hätte. Nachlässigkeit im diplomatischen Umgang trug daher mindestens ebenso zu seinem Scheitern bei wie Unzulänglichkeiten in der Kriegführung. Petra Ehm ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Sonderforschungsbereich "Pluralisierung und Autorität in der Frühen Neuzeit" an der Universität München.
