• Sommario/riassunto: This original and historically rich book examines the influence of gender in shaping the Egyptian nation from the nineteenth century through the revolution of 1919 and into the 1940's. In Egypt as a Woman, Beth Baron divides her narrative into two strands: the first analyzes the gendered language and images of the nation, and the second considers the political activities of women nationalists. She ; shows that, even though women were largely excluded from participation in the state, the visual imagery of nationalism was replete with female figures. Baron juxtaposes the idealization of the family and the feminine in nationalist rhetoric with transformations in elite households and the work of women activists striving for national independence.

• Sommario/riassunto: Au-delà de la mise en valeur économique, la colonisation vise à transformer les sociétés colonisées, à les guider vers l'idée du progrès telle que définie par les colonisateurs. L'instrument de régulation sociale qu'est la justice ne peut sortir inchangé d'une telle entreprise. Qu'il s'agisse de la justice des colonisateurs ou de celle des colonisés, la colonisation impose une transformation des organisations judiciaires afin de rendre possible la réalisation du projet colonial, tout en assurant la domination française. L'étude de l'organisation judiciaire en ; Indochine vise à montrer dans quelle mesure, le projet colonial de transformation des sociétés a été accompli par le biais de la justice. Cela renvoie à se questionner sur les choix qui ont été faits et à déterminer leur origine, qu'ils s'agissent des contingences imposées par le contexte colonial ou des lignes directrices de la politique coloniale définie en métropole, tout en tenant compte des spécificités propres à chaque possession et, sans oublier, la question des moyens disponibles et mis en oeuvre. Le temps de la construction, objet de ce premier tome, c'est celui des quarante premières années de la colonisation française en Indochine, pendant lesquelles est mise en place une justice coloniale française bien particulière, coexistant avec les organisations judiciaires des colonisés.
